Ironically I drafted this post a few weeks back and now I’m in a situation where I am doing this very thing. There’s nothing wrong with opening old portfolio work and touching them up… a section is too dark, too bright, too colorful, too dull… fix it! It’s like a breath of fresh air and you’ll be much more comfortable presenting your work in the end.
Some think that updating work is owning up to it being not as good the first time. That could very well be the case, hence why you should take the time to make it awesome. We grow as artists everyday and sometimes we outgrow our work or even the techniques that created such work. I can’t count how many times I’ve opened 4 year old Photoshop files and couldn’t even fathom my thought process for development. The end product was neat but the production was shameful. It made me realize how much I’ve grown over the years both in artistry and technique.
I dare you to take the time to improve on one portfolio piece that has been secretly agonizing you and see how much happier it makes you when you place it amongst the rest of your work again!
